Construction of the present three-room St. Patrick School, with basement auditorium for parish and school activities, was begun in April 1940. Archbishop M.J. O'Brien purchased land across from the Church from a local resident, assisted by Parish Priest, Father J. Powell. With many parish men donating time and materials and with the Rashotte Brothers of Tweed as the main contractors, the two story brick school was built in record time. It opened for classes on September 14, 1940 with an enrolment of fifty-four pupils. The first teachers at the school were Miss Madeline Walsh and Miss Loretta Cunningham. On Sunday, October 6, 1940 at a special ceremony, Archbishop O'Brien blessed the school and named it in honour of St. Patrick.

Many changes have occurred since 1940. Until 1965, St. Patrick was a continuation school in which grades one to ten were taught; students then attended either Tamworth Continuation School or Regiopolis in Kingston for their remaining high school years. After that year, students attended Napanee District Secondary School or Regi for all of their secondary education. In 1968, the school became part of the Frontenac-Lennox and Addington County Roman Catholic Separate School Board (F.L.& A.C.R.C.S.S.B.) administered from Kingston.

In 1998, the F.L.& A.C.R.C.S.S.B. amalgamated with the Hastings Prince Edward S.S.B. to form our current School Board, Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, with our Board Office located in Napanee.

School Code of Conduct

The community of J.J. O’Neill and St. Patrick Catholic School is concerned with the welfare and safety of our children. This Code of Conduct, which is based on the Ontario Code of Conduct, is intended to be a clearly communicated set of expectations formulated for all members of the school community. We will focus on prevention and restorative practices that will foster dignity and respect while ensuring the safety of everyone through fair and progressive strategies designed to promote self-respect and respect for others. We believe all children are created in the image of God and can achieve academic excellence within a safe and caring, Christ-centered, learning environment.

STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOUR

We believe that at J.J. O’Neill and St. Patrick Catholic School, RESPECT FOR OTHERS is directly tied to how WE RESPECT OURSELVES. By treating all people in a positive, supportive, and caring manner, we also respect ourselves.

The standards of behaviour apply:

on school property,
while traveling on a school bus that is under contract to the school/board,
in off-site school-sponsored activities such as trips and tournaments
in circumstances where engaging in an activity could have a negative impact on the school climate (i.e. Internet)

Respect, Civility and Responsible Citizenship

All members of the school community must:

conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the beliefs and practices of the CatholicFaith;
show respect and comply with all applicable federal and provincial acts and regulationsand municipal by-laws;
demonstrate honesty and integrity;
show respect for differences in people, their ideas and opinions;
treat one another with dignity and respect at all times, and especially when there isdisagreement;
show respect and treat others fairly, regardless of their race, ancestry, place of origin,colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age or disability;
show respect for the rights of others;
show proper care and regard for school property and the property of others;
take appropriate measures to help those in need;
show respect for persons who are in a position of authority;
show respect for the needs of others to work in an environment of learning and teaching;
comply with standards regarding appropriate dress, as required.

Bullying: means aggressive and typically repeated behaviour by a pupil where;
the behaviour is intended by the pupil to have the effect of, or the pupil ought to know that the behaviour would likely have the effect of,

i) causing harm, fear or distress to another individual, including physical, psychological, social oracademic harm, harm to the individual’s reputation or harm to the individual’s property, or ii) the behaviours occurs in a context where there is real; or perceived power imbalance between the pupil and the individual based on factors such as size, strength, age, intelligence, peer group power, economic status, social status, religion, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, family circumstances, gender, gender identity, gender expression, race, disability or the receipt of special education ("intimidation").

Cyber-bullying: For the purposes of the definition of "bullying" bullying includes bullying by electronic means including:

a )creating a web page or blog in which the creator assumes the identity of another person;b)impersonating another person as the author of content or messages posted on the internet; and

c) communicating material electronically to more than one individual or posting material on awebsite that may be accessed by one or more individuals.

Respect:

Of Self – Students should show respect for themselves as creations of God, appreciatetheir special gifts, and make an effort to contribute to their school;
For Others – Students are expected to treat all members of the school community in apolite and cooperative manner. Profanity, name-calling, poor sportsmanship, verbal or physical threats, racial slurs, and sexual harassment are unacceptable. Bullying, including verbal, and physical acts of aggression, will not be tolerated.
For Authority – Students are to be respectful and honest when dealing with school staff,and are to follow the rules and expectations of the school. Lying, stealing, and cheating are unacceptable.
For Property – Students are expected to treat their own property, school property, and theproperty of others respectfully. Supplies, equipment, and textbooks must be used with care, keeping conservation in mind. Students have a responsibility to maintain the school yard, desks, and washrooms in a neat and tidy manner. Persons who damage property will be held financially responsible.
